October 17, 2008: Day 47 (Week 35)

Aidan is now only 5 weeks premature as he hit week 35 today. (Brief digression: Going all the way back to the 6-week ultrasound, Aidan has measured about 5 days small. So we've always wondered if they were really 5 days off on his gestational age...not that it makes any difference now...)

We have nurse Esther again for the next 4 days. Aidan had a really good day. His oxygen level was at 25% and below most of the day, and for a little while he was on room air! I showed up in time to feed him at 5pm, and he again ate the whole bottle!

At the 8pm weighing:

1990 grams (4 lbs 6.2 oz) is up 50 grams from last night, and only 55 grams short of 4 1/2 pounds. Still hoping and planning for Aidan to reach this on Sunday.

OK, the highly astute amongst you will notice that the weights on these pictures don't match. This is because nurse Pat ended up weighing Aidan 4 times, the first 3 tries she got a different weight. When 1990 popped up a second time on the 4th try, she declared 1990 grams the winner. This caused me to think back to several weeks ago when I asked the nurse what the accuracy tolerance of these scales is. If you remember, I received a strange look for asking, as she probably rolled her eyes on the inside, thinking "engineers".

For the 8pm feeding we decided to breast feed Aidan first, and then I would finish the feeding with a bottle. This is interesting. First, we weigh Aidan on a special scale and note his weight. Then Denyse feeds him. Afterwards we weigh Aidan again to see how much he ate. This way we know at a minimum how much of the bottle he must eat to get all the calories he needs for the 8pm feeding. The problem is, we didn't disconnect all of the cables for the weighings, so the scale wasn't that accurate, and it showed that he didn't really eat anything.

So, I attempted to feed Aidan the entire 35cc bottle. He did pretty well, but then got *really* tired, and started to de-saturate pretty bad when I tried to burp him.

So we had to give up on the last 10cc and gavaged him.
gavage: (noun) The administration of food by force, typically through a tube leading down the throat to the stomach

Here's Aidan waiting patiently to be fed:

The 8pm feeding was a little rough, but overall, it was a very good day for Aidan.
