September 2, 2008: Day 2

At 5am they switched Aidan from the high frequency ventilator to a regular ventilator, and put in a feeding tube. They're starting Aidan very slowly with 1cc of milk every 3 hours.

We changed our first diapers today (yes I did one too). They are really small, about the size of a square of toilet paper and only weighing 4 grams.





The ventilator was set in the morning to initiate a breath every second if Aidan doesn't start one on his own. If Aidan does start one on his own, the ventilator just makes sure the breath is deep enough.

They started the day with a setting of 60 breaths per minute (1 per second). By the end of the day, they had dialed it back to only initiate one 40 times a minute. In watching the machine, Aidan was starting to initiate most of the breaths on his own before the ventilator would kick in. This was very exciting to see.
